SSS Strawberries and Gina’s Table are committed to ethical practices at the core of their operations, focusing on local production, fair employment conditions, reducing food waste and contributing to the circular economy. Prior to the establishment of their state-of-the-art freeze drying facility, Australia had minimal commercial-scale freeze-drying capacity, leading to the opportunity to create a new Australian industry that ethically sources supermarket-surplus food to produce their 'Happles' freeze-dried fruit range. The products are 100% Australian made with locally sourced fruit, with a commitment to no added sugar or preservatives. The facility meets high standards of safety and ethical practices, including compliance with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point, Good Manufacturing Practices and Traceability standards, as well as holding food safety certifications and regulatory approvals. Additionally, the business contributes to the local community by creating jobs in regional Australia and actively engaging with local and governmental bodies to support primary producing communities. They are also working towards finding a packaging solution that is recycled and low waste, currently using aluminum packaging for the freeze-dried fruit products.
By pioneering a large-scale freeze-drying facility in Australia, SSS Strawberries is addressing food waste by transforming surplus fruits into nutrient-dense products that are shelf-stable and easy to transport. The initiative not only reduces food waste significantly but also demonstrates responsible production and consumption patterns. The processing of surplus fruits into freeze-dried products helps reduce energy and fuel consumption typically used in cold storage and transportation. In addition, the brand has implemented various energy-saving measures such as insulation, rapid-opening doors, VRF compressors and the use of natural gas for water heating. They are also planning to install solar panels to offset a significant portion of their energy needs in the future.
The state-of-the-art freeze-drying facility built by SSS Strawberries in Bundaberg, Australia, represents a commitment to sustainable industrialisation and innovation in food processing. The facility has created 50 new permanent jobs for locals and provided safe working conditions. SSS Strawberries also prioritises positive treatment of workers, offering fair remuneration, apartment-style living accommodations and the SSS Village, a backpacker hostel designed to provide a comfortable and secure environment for farmworkers. Their founders, who had negative experiences as seasonal fruit pickers, established SSS Strawberries with the intention of creating a respectful and family-like workplace environment.

The products arrived in great condition, especially considering the fragility of the Happles. Little to no waste packaging and the product packaging itself is bright and colourful, eye catching and would stand out on a shelf in the supermarket. I love the super clean and simple ingredients list and best of all they taste amazing! The kids LOVE them and so do I! Perfect delicious snack, convenient pack to take on the go. I honestly LOVE that this brand is working on lessening food waste by taking supermarket-rejected fruits and turning them into perfectly nutritious snacks. I really don’t like food wastage so for me this is a huge plus! I am also impressed that they have been able to create 50+ jobs for local seasonal fruit pickers. Just reading their statements has made me love the brand so much more! What an amazing company!
