Ethical
Kaiyu Superfoods is a First Nations owned business that sources 100% Australian products, including Kakadu Plums purchased from a nearby Northern Territory First Nations community. The plums are wild harvested and the powder is processed in their own facility by a First Nations employee. The brand is part of the Indigenous Enterprise Group and the CRCNA's improving the efficiency of Kakadu Plum value chains project, working towards establishing a co-op for First Nations businesses in the native food and botanical industry and implementing blockchain technology for greater transparency in supply chains. Their Kakadu Plum powder has been tested for quality by the University of Qld and does not contain the seed, which is returned to the land to decompose. They also offer Faba bean protein powder made in Victoria from locally grown beans.

Sustainable
Kaiyu uses sustainable practices in their packaging, such as recyclable containers, biodegradable pouches, compostable mailers, tape and labels, as well as biodegradable bubble wrap. They have also planted over 1,000 native plants and trees, returning waste seeds to the earth, recycling paper waste and using compost on their own vegetable garden. The brand has regenerated 10 acres of degraded mango orchard land by using bush regenerative agriculture and planting native foods. They have also built habitat for the endangered Regent Parrot by planting native plants on a golf course. Kaiyu does not use chemical pesticides or herbicides in their bush orchards and practices energy conservation by closely monitoring temperature and air conditioning usage. They reuse cardboard boxes and food gloves and compost excess boxes for weed control in their garden.

Responsible
Kaiyu is committed to supporting other First Nations businesses and communities by providing freeze-drying services for products like Kakadu Plum powder, allowing these businesses to sell the powder instead of just the fruit. Additionally, they assist with labelling, packaging, and manufacturing for these businesses and stock products from other First Nations businesses on their website to increase brand awareness. When hiring, they prioritise First Nations employees, and have donated to organizations that assist First Nations youth and women.
Product reviews from our experts…

It was easy to blend into smoothies with no clumps or bumps and I found it easy to use in cooking. I love that it has added vitamin C for supporting iron absorption.

I am impressed by the brand’s ethics around sustainability and giving back to first nation people. I also love how there is no waste with the fruit and every detail hasn’t been missed with biodegradable packaging.
