The Great Wrap’s Great Mate Starter Kit includes a refillable dispenser, the Great Mate, and two Nudie Rolls for home compostable cling wrap. The dispenser is designed to easily dispense and slice the wrap, which can be composted after use.

Ethical Practices

Great Wrap prides itself on manufacturing its own materials to ensure safe practices and conditions for its staff. The brand's dispensers are made in Melbourne, with a close relationship with a small manufacturer to ensure safe practices on their site as well. While currently sourcing biopolymers from overseas, Great Wrap plans to transition to setting up its own biorefinery for production, using carbon capture as the source. The Factory Manager has worked diligently to maintain a safe environment for staff on site.

Sustainable Practices

Great Wrap manufactures compostable materials in Melbourne. They use recycled materials in their dispenser and locally manufacture their products, including wrap and refillable dispensers. The company ensures all waste goes to the right waste stream by having disposal bins on site for recycling, soft plastic, paper recycling and landfill. They also have a compost bin in their kitchen area for food scraps and used Great Wrap. All of their materials are compostable or recyclable and they do not ship internationally to minimise their global footprint.

Social Impact

Great Wrap demonstrates diversity and support for marginalised communities through their hiring practices. They have partnered with organisations like the Brotherhood of St. Lawrence and Matchworks and support Free to Feed, a social enterprise for asylum seekers and refugees. Additionally, the brand is committed to sustainability with initiatives such as setting up solar panels and minimising waste through recycling. They provide benefits to employees such as ESOP, extra leave days and access to resources like free psychology sessions and volunteer days. Maternity and paternity leave, as well as miscarriage leave, are also included in their employee contracts.

This is a great compostable alternative to a pesky single-use product. While my home has been plastic-wrap free for close to 20 years I appreciate that most homes and possibly all hospitality businesses use conventional plastic wrap. I’d love to see this product in use in these places! I’m also really impressed with Great Wraps’ social sustainability initiatives, from recruiting employees with diverse backgrounds through the Brotherhood of St Lawrence to additional leave programs and shares for their workforce. They are such a great employer who actively cares for their staff! I’m also impressed with the brand’s commitment to manufacture locally in Melbourne, creating employment and reducing emissions associated with importing.

The zippy cutter on the dispenser was a nice addition that made it easier to cut pieces of wrap without cutting fingers. I love that this company already manufactures its holders in Melbourne and is looking to source the biopolymer from Australia rather than shipping overseas. I was also impressed by the brands focus on social responsibility and all of the benefits offered to employees, as well as the volunteering.
