Ethical
Dermagen, a manufacturer of eczema and dermatitis treatments, ensures that their Manuka Oil samples are verified by Southern Cross University before use to guarantee the presence of necessary plant chemicals. The brand has also found a local Manuka Oil Farm in Western Australia that yields high levels of these key components. The brand provides online counselling to patients experiencing eczema, dermatitis, or TSW symptoms and ensures transparency in both sourcing ingredients and not testing on animals. Dermagen believes their products, such as the Propolis Balm and Manuka Oil Balm, can make a significant difference in treating chronic wounds, which cost the Australian health sector over $3 billion annually.
Sustainable
Dermagen's tubes are made from sustainable and easily recyclable materials such as recycled plastic and bamboo. The use of recycled plastic helps to keep non-biodegradable waste out of landfills, while reducing plastic production by up to 50%. The brand also opted for plastic tubes over glass containers to reduce the carbon footprint for shipping and ensure hygiene of the product. The Manuka Oil used in their products is sourced sustainably from plants that are trimmed and not killed when harvested, making it a more ethical alternative to harvesting Manuka Honey. The use of essential oils allows for a sustainable yield without relying on the population of honey bees to produce the oil. The brand also recycles and reuses its packaging where possible.
Responsible
Dermagen is committed to social responsibility efforts, including supporting creative start-ups focused on climate change solutions, offering free advice and information to those suffering from severe eczema and topical steroid withdrawal (TSW) symptoms and donating to related charities. They also prioritise sourcing ethically grown oils with beneficial plant phytochemicals and invest in education and awareness for the proper management of eczema and TSW symptoms. The brand was founded by a community pharmacist who was inspired to develop effective and safe skincare products after seeing the difficulties faced by individuals with TSW symptoms, including her own son.

As a mother who herself experiences dry skin conditions, I was impressed to use a balm on my baby that has a strong focus on promoting skin regeneration and renewal. It strongly appeals to me to use an excellent non-toxic balm with a high skin regeneration focus as a preventative method to keep my baby’s skin smooth, hydrated and healthy. Based on my own personal experience with my skin, this is something I highly value in a product.

I am impressed by Dermagen’s social responsibility initiative to invest in education awareness for the proper management of eczema and TSW symptoms. It is an excellent approach to supporting our health system, while doing so in a holistic way. In addition, it is great to see Dermagen dig deep into the ethics of manuka farming practices and choose to support local manuka farmers within their supply chain.
