Burt's Bees products are made with over 95% natural ingredients and at least 98% natural ingredients in new products. They are free from phthalates, parabens, petrolatum and sodium lauryl sulfate. The brand has been Leaping Bunny Certified for over 14 years and has been cruelty-free for nearly 40 years, as they do not test on animals and only test on human volunteers. Burt's Bees products are manufactured in the USA.
Burt's Bees has made significant efforts towards sustainability in their packaging and operations. They use over 60% recycled materials in their packaging, have been operating landfill-free since 2010 and have been carbon-neutral certified since 2015. They have also focused on reducing waste and energy consumption, with a 13% reduction in virgin packaging materials and 83% of their packaging being reusable, recyclable, or compostable. They aim to work towards a circular economy by using sustainable materials and designing packaging for recyclability.
Burt's Bees is committed to responsible sourcing and supporting women's empowerment through initiatives like SheKeeper. They have 17 sourcing community partnerships focused on clean water access, women's and children's empowerment, health, safety and biodiversity. In addition, over 40,000 livelihoods have been supported through their Global Supply Chain Investment Program, responsible sourcing assessments and third-party audits. Furthermore, 63% of waxes, oils, and butters are traced to origin and verified through on-site visits. The SheKeeper program, launched in October 2021, is a $2-million USD, three-year partnership with USAID, Partnership for Natural Ingredients and Burt's Bees shea and beeswax suppliers to diversify income for shea producers in West Africa and empower over 800 women to expand their skill set.

Burt’s Bees Watermelon Lip Balm is a great staple lip balm that smells deliciously like watermelon and also tastes nice! Not that I’m eating the lip balm but you know that anything touching your lips will be consumed in small quantities. The formula is long lasting, hydrating and definitely one of my go to lip balms. Burt’s Bees effort to recycle and minimise packaging waste is commendable. Their partnerships with organisations that make a difference is also amazing.

It’s a simple product, easy to apply, smells great and the packaging means it won’t get squashed in my backpack so I’d choose this for my travelling companion. This brand has been around for a long time, and still manages to keep up the commitments to be environmentally and socially conscious.
