71bay partners with non-profit organisations in Bangladesh that are registered members of the World Fair Trade organisation, ensuring accountability and adherence to the 10 Principles of Fair Trade. Through their focus on community-driven empowerment and providing fair wages and working conditions, 71bay has seen positive effects such as children from marginalised backgrounds graduating from universities and securing office jobs, reduced domestic abuse cases, and increased respect for women's voices. By continuing to support fair-trade handcrafted wares, the brand enables artisans to plan for the future, improve financial stability, access better healthcare and education for their families and honor cultural heritage through traditional crafting techniques and materials.
71bay works with jute and kantha for their objects and wares due to their sustainability, cultural significance and heritage. Jute is a highly sustainable raw material with a low carbon footprint, while kantha is historically a way for women to create functional blankets out of recycled sarees. All jute wares are handcrafted in rural areas of Bangladesh by women artisans, who earn fair wages and receive training as needed. Kantha wares use no new cloth or dyes, keeping the production process environmentally friendly. The metal ornaments are presented in handmade paper envelopes with a card showcasing the impact it creates for its makers.
71bay focuses on empowering artisans in villages through the production of jute ware, providing them with employment opportunities that allow them to stay within their communities and support their families. By working closely with both women and men artisans, the brand aims to build up the entire community by offering training and employment opportunities. They also prioritise education for children to combat child labor and early marriages, while preserving traditional craftsmanship and skills. In contrast, artisans in the city work on Kantha ware and include sex workers and victims of trafficking or rape, providing them with a new source of income and a sense of community. The brand emphasises women empowerment through financial independence and education.

The ornaments are stunning, high quality, beautiful and the ethical story behind them is evident from the moment you open each ornament. Going direct to the maker to help drive change is as ethical as it gets. They will definitely be on my tree this year! I am impressed that they work directly with women impacted by trafficking and are helping them at the source, not via a charity. This brand needs to be known far and wide!

I like the well told story behind the product – I looked at each item differently knowing that story. Lovely designs and well made so that you can keep them and reuse them! The ethics behind this product by providing meaningful employment for people is commendable – keeping local artisans skills alive while supporting families. The reuse of sari threads is great – it shows reuse in action which is important for all to see!

These tree ornaments are beautiful in design and are very well made. Most importantly they are also changing the lives of the artisans who are producing them. They are joyful in every way! I’m also impressed by the positive social impact that this young enterprise is already making. Well done!
